It's Time to Take the Lead!

You might be surprised to learn that I’m a little bit competitive. (OK, you might not be all that surprised.)

And when it comes to our hospital being number one, I’m a LOT competitive. Which is why I hate to see Good Samaritan lagging behind our sister hospitals in participation in the Patient Safety survey. Our percentage completion rate is only 45 percent...that’s 22 percent lower than Saint Francis or Nebraska Heart. We can do better! If you haven’t taken the survey yet, please take it right now. Follow this link to the Patient Safety Survey. It only takes a couple of minutes.

Here’s the current breakdown of staff participation by ministry. I’ll get another update on Friday, and I’d love to see GSH take the lead (wouldn’t you?)

Nebraska Heart                        223/325 or 67%
Saint Francis                            724/1085 or 67%
St. Mary’s                                  95/148 or 65%
Good Samaritan                      674/1495 or 45%
Saint Elizabeth                        575/1748 or 33%

And just a heads up…we start the Performance Culture Assessment in March and I’m counting on each of you to take the survey so GSH leads the way for participation throughout the entire survey. Go team!

Guest Entry: Tell Us About Patient Safety

Good Friday afternoon, everyone! It’s Carol Wahl. Mike is wrapping up his extended Christmas vacation, so I’m taking a quick opportunity to comandeer offer a guest entry on his blog.

If you’ve read the Weekly Update or the Electronic Exchange lately, you might have seen a little something about the patient safety survey that’s now underway. I’m writing today to encourage you to participate in this survey.

We all know we work in a complex field – healthcare – where safety for patients, employees, physicians, volunteers, visitors is a critical priority.  Safety at Good Sam has been a top priority for years.  To address safety, over the years we have implemented many initiatives such as lift equipment/ceiling lifts, Transport Team, Just Culture, TeamSTEPPS…just to name a few. We offer the annual patient safety survey to further improve our culture of safety in our pursuit of offering the best patient care possible.

Please, please take a moment to participate in this survey. You can click right here to start! Your feedback is critical to maintaining our safety practices that work and improving those that need addressed. There is no such thing as an opinion that doesn’t matter here. We need to hear from you, and what we hear we really do use. For instance, communication hand-offs handoff between PACU and the patient care areas as well as the green “ticket to ride” that Transport Team uses were key initiatives that arose from the patient safety survey.

Hiliary O’Neill from Peds took the survey and in her words, not mine, it didn’t even take 10 minutes to complete!

This survey is open through February 4. Thanks go to those who’ve already taken a moment to participate. If you haven’t had a chance yet, please make time in your schedule to take the survey. Our patients will be glad you did.

In the meantime, I’ll check Mike’s schedule for his next travel day when I can take over his blog again make another guest blog appearance. Topic suggestions anyone?
